Just bumping from last summer.... the 'new products in the supermarket' all claim to taste just like homemade...when really it's so easy to make the real thing at home.
Check out the world's easiest HOMEMADE MAYO recipe
We wouldn't be without our homemade mayonaise as a fridge staple for:
Coleslaw
A dip with wedges
On homemade hamburgers
On sandwiches instead of butter
etc etc etc etc
Albeit made with oil, use good oil to lessen the IMPACT! Good Oil is GOOD.

Pure Eco Washing Powder
Every week the laundry powder addition to the supermarket trolley increases the total $ bill significantly.
I am a little perturbed by the sheer volume of shelf space that laundry powder and detergents take of the 'valuable' supermarket space... this indicates to me that they are making too much money out of something that we all need and buy regularly.
Recently in New Zealand the major brands made their containers smaller, by concentrating the product inside, but old habits die hard and many users (like me) were probably using just as much as they used to, hence doubling their expenditure.
well well well...
I set out to see how I could make my own laundry powder that wasn't going to give my children rashes, wasn't highly perfumed and was inexpensive to make.
RECIPE!
2 parts Sunlight Soap (or a plain soap or laundry soap) - A box is 500gm
1 part Washing Soda (buy in bulk from BinnInn or Trademe) - i.e. 250 gm
...a dash of an essential oil if you like it scented!
Cut up the Soap into cubes, and place in a food processor. It is a bit tough on the food processor so the smaller the better - or grate if you don't use a food processor. Add the washing soda, and blend until it is a fine powder.
A tablespoon full is enough for a dirty load, whites may still need soaking depending on how you treat these. Every now and then I use a warm wash also just to boost cleaning especially of oil stained clothes (this is what I did with commercial powders).
Although I haven't tried it with a front loader as yet, it is non foaming so I expect will be fine.
The above recipe cost me $5, and it lasts between 3-4 weeks, with washing everyday, including washing my cloth nappies.
The perfect way to wash your Modern Cloth Nappies.
Go on, you'll be amazed.
One less thing to buy each week, less packaging to dispose of & enjoy....what are you going to do with your 'extra $8 a week'???
Enjoy x

Please post your natural slug & snail deterrents (and killers) here.
They are driving me crazy...we use Quash but want something else that doesn't cost $9a box.
It's so hard growing seeds as one day they are there and the next they are not.

Herbs and Vegetables - grow the non-Hybrid way

I have recently learnt about the true importance of growing non-hybrid, heritage varieties of seeds and plants. Ginny from Ginny's Herbs has a fabulous selection of beautiful plants for you to make your garden a useful and enjoyable place to be. By growing heritage varieties we are ensuring that these plants will live on for generations, unlike many of the hybrid varieties that are designed only to last one season (you're not going to be able to take the seeds from these year after year).
Ginny's Herbs supplies seedlings of herbs, old, tried & true non-hybrid vegetables and flowers by mail order throughout New Zealand. Her herbs are GE free, many are much more disease resistant than the new hybrid types, and the flavour of any heritage crop is always going to be something to treasure. Ginny has developed `Old, Tried and True' non-hybrid vegetable and flower seed & seedlings under controlled conditions on her 6 acre property to ensure her seeds do not cross pollinate. Her emphasis is on encouraging others to save their own seed and help keep the best of the older varieties for future generations.
Companion planting also plays an important part of her philosophy, with these types of plants also available.
Ginny also offers advice and recipes for using herbs in remedies for many uses around the home.
I'm an absolute convert to buying non-hybrid seedlings and seeds now.
Lets see how many more of us can discover the true benefits of growing heritage plants. Now is the perfect time to get your summer seedlings - one beautiful tomato I am trying from Ginny's range this year is the Silvery Fir Tree. This particular tomato is reputed to be particularly blight resistant, which I am very interested in as the hybrids we planted last year were a complete failure due to blight.

Fancy a cuppa?
I love a good cup of tea, in fact we drink a lot of tea in our house so I was pretty excited to have a selection of Kerikeri Organic Teas to try.
From the beautifully named "Bay of Islands Breakfast Tea", the comforting "All Day Cuppa", the "Champagne of Green Teas" - Green Darjeeling, the very fragrant (and my husbands favourite) the Honey and Ginger herbal tea - I was in absolute Tea heaven.
I also sampled the following delicious flavours: Chamomile and Cinnamon, Black Darjeeling, Manuka Mint, Royal Earl Grey, Rooibos and Manuka, Lemon Ginger Kawa, and the warming Vanilla Chai.
I love this quote that I have borrowed from their website "If you are cold, tea will warm you. If you are too heated, it will cool you. If you are depressed, it will cheer you. If you are excited, it will calm you. ~ Gladstone, 1865"
Kerikeri Teas use Organic tea leaves, and blend these teas with spices and herbs, sourced from Fair Trade producers where possible.
They have a range of black, green, white , herbal teas, caffeine free teas, and Rooibos Tea. These can be purchased directly from their website, or they will direct you to retailers in your area who stock their range.
Great gift ideas for Xmas.

Where is it REALLY made??
Given I run Lola & Ben which stocks the most beautiful New Zealand Made Style for Little Ones, I am passionate about New Zealand Made.
I do try to buy New Zealand made in general if I can... but with FOOD I am very selective regarding the origins of the food that fuels & nourishes our family.
I do not buy food grown or manufactured in CHINA. My other job involves food policy, and so this decision has sound judgement behind it.
Lately I have noticed our local Pak'n Save has gradually been introducing 'new' ranges which are mostly from China...
Tell tale signs are:
Significantly cheaper than the alternatives
Packaging is likely to state manufactured for...BUT not where
Terrible graphic designs
Chinese writing..although not always the case
& not only these new brands.. but existing brands that one day are made here and the next in China.
Of the 'new' brands. I have noticed an unknown toothpaste sneaking in, baby wipes, washing powder, confectionery...and it's only the start.
With the track record of products out of China it is likely to be fine most the time.. but then drastically terrible other times. There has been chemicals found in Chinese toothpaste before now...
NZ doesn't have the comprehensive checks in place to ensure ongoing safety of these products.
Steer Clear... your health is not worth the risk! What have you noticed??

Just Soap - a little luxury everyday

Lovely Linda at Just Soap gave me a few of her beautiful handmade soaps to try. Just Soap soaps are handmade with no wasteful packaging, and the finest quality ingredients. These soaps are large bars (140 - 150 grams) , and look fabulous on display in the bathroom, and they last too, unlike some soaps that I have used before that melt away after one use.
I've been trying the Hemp and Patchouli bar (looks devine, and smells even better), the Pineapple Mango (beautiful summertime smells) and the Oatmeal, Milk and Honey bar (which has been great for my kids too) - my skin really does feel so much more moisturised. I have very sensitive skin too, but without all the harsh chemicals that I normally react to in commercial soaps, I have enjoyed using these with no problems at all. Finally I can use something that smells nice too :)
"Why Use Handmade Soaps?
Most of the soap available in shops today is not really soap at all but detergent. Detergents are petroleum based like petrol & kerosene. . Other proven harmful ingredients in commercial soaps include SLS, DEA, Isopropyl alcohol, BHT & Triclosan which can cause severe skin irritation. The biggest difference in handmade & commercial soap is that they strip out the natural glycerine to sell as a by product. Natural soap is loaded with natural glycerine & it keeps your skin soft & healthy as it absorbs water from the air. With the ever increasing man made chemicals in the world its good to use a natural product. Treat yourself!"

Linda also will do a batch of soaps free from Palm Oil by request (minimum ten soaps) if you would prefer. Her ingredients include olive oil, coconut oil, rice bran oil, palm oil & Shea butter. Sunflower oil, castor oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, hemp oil, cocoa butter & lots of Shea butter are also used .
There is also a range of natural shampoos, conditioners, body wash, Shea Butter skin treatments, Sensitive Skin soaps, gardeners soaps, even Dead Sea Mud soap.

Summer is on the way
Such a beautiful day today. I can see summer coming - finally.
My younger daughter and I spent the morning outside, she played with the chooks, and I picked herbs - Rosemary and Lavender for the fresh fragrance, Borage for its medicinal properties, Mint for my drinks, and Italian Parsley for tonights salad. Spring days like this are a delight. Make the most of them.

Being on a strict gluten free diet, the relentlessness of it is daunting, but having a new, convenient and healthy gluten free option for a quick and easy meal option is exciting.

Hello from me
Hello
Just a wee introduction from me. I'm Kylie and will be joining the pureeco team. All things natural are important to me with two young daughters, and we enjoy a country lifestyle in Whangarei.
I thought I'd share with you my wee gem of a find - this product has really helped me immensely.

Naturelene The Invisible Glove.
It's a natural barrier cream that you apply morning and night (or as often as you like) , which stops all the nasty daily irritants getting into your skin (dish wash liquid, soaps, household sprays). I suffer from chronic dermatitis on my hands, and even the most gentle of products were irritating my skin, making it crack, itch and bleed.
Within a week of using this product I had noticed a huge difference, no longer are they cracked, I don't wake at night with the intense itchiness that I used to have. I still have to be careful with what products I do use on my hands but this has made an incredible difference.
The product can also be used on cracked heels, babies bottoms, chaffing and any dry skin area.
Its made from 100% Natural plant extracts with no colours, petroleum or animal products. And are non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
Available from some pharmacies in NZ, or online direct from Australian manufacturers www.ellenjay.com.au

I've joined the ranks of the looney

They say to be careful of your thoughts because those thoughts become actions...
Well I've always thought the growing Giant Pumpkins was a little bit crazy and the people that did it even crazier....
We'll NOW that's us. We have Giant Pumpkin Seeds germinating in the Laundry.
Let the competition begin. Ben has already chosen the strongest plant, a few more weeks and we'll plant them out....bring on summer.
Will keep you posted.
For your giant pumpkin fix, we got our seeds from Kings Seeds

is it easier...??
In late summer, each year I've been dedicating two of the six vegetable beds to my way of composting...
I see the value in composting, but not so keen on the manual labour involved (although doubt my way is any easier)... so each year I compost all the vege scraps, the cuttings, weeds and other garden rubbish by heaping it on the vege beds... it breaks down over winter and come spring I dig it in.
This worked amazingly last year for us, the plants in the beds that I regenerated went crazy...it really is worth it.
Hubby sharpened my spade..and off I went. I roughly dug the two beds...put grass clippings on them and will re dig and plant in October.
Yay Spring is here!

Starting off life naturally
You'd be forgiven in thinking that the only brands out there are the ones ladened with perfume, chemicals, fragrance, preservatives as these are the brands in just about every baby publication, the dominant positions in the supermarket and the major baby resources online promoting these brands....
Even though they advertise the fact that they have natural ingredients..most of it should be in a test tube...not on babies skin. Lets face it, would you moisturise baby from a test tube...just because it's in a nice package doesn't make it better.
Now take a moment to read the labels before buying... take it upon yourself to care from your precious newborn, after all that is what you do every day in every aspect of their lives.
The products used with baby... are often over looked... it's not hard, if you can't read the ingredients chances are they belong in a laboratory not in your bathroom cupboard!
Pure Eco's position on this is clear...

Gaia Skin Care is fantastic. Skin care that is free of these nasties. Skincare you can trust with your little ones.

Beer..without the gluten!

As you know gluten is everywhere, including alcohol.
People needing to follow a gluten free diet now have a beer to choose from...
O'Briens Gluten Free Beer
Available widely across New Zealand check out their website for stockists
Made in Australia

Ale*Pale Ale*Lager
Released in December 2005, O'BRIEN PREMIUM LAGER is a full-bodied, naturally craft-brewed, gluten-free lager, with a distinct fruity aroma and flavour.
The long patient fermentation and maturation periods deliver a smooth, clean and rich beer.
O'BRIEN PREMIUM LAGER was one of only five international beers to win an award at the Gluten Free Beer Festival held as a part of the Chesterfield Beer Festival (UK) in February 2006.
And the Judges' verdict: "For the lager drinker, this offers a real choice, and the no-coeliac may not even notice it is a gluten-free beer."
A classic Australian lager .. anyone can enjoy this!"

Even though Pure Eco isn't a beer drinker, it was great to have a choice, roll on summer shandys.

Little paper packages!

This is how I prefer to buy my seedlings.
1. I usually manage to kill most seeds (with the ones I sow directly to the soil...the slugs often get them!).. and I forget to water them!
2.I prefer to buy plants wrapped in paper or biodegradable containers. It's incredible how quickly those other pots add up. Just unnecessary wastage!
3. Awapuni Nurseries are stocked in the local supermarket..in the $12 I spent on plants earlier in the week (silverbeet, spring onions, celery, and Italian parsley) will save us $100's in a few months.
4. Awapuni Nurseries do have a online shop, and I have bought plants this way also, great for bulk buys.
5. Great value $3ish for heaps of plants...often more than stated on their packet.
and...with the packaging I just dig it in also...extra worm fodder.
Roll on spring (although winter is quite nice, as there are no weeds growing)
Enjoy

Mothers Little Secret
In general no-one gets as much Omega 3 as they need for optimal health...while we each fish 2-3 times a week this may not be enough.
Omega 3 is vital to growing brains, healthy skin, good brain function, healthy eyes...the list goes on.
We give our children Omega 3 (fish oil) supplements (and probably not as regularly as I should) I also supplement our diets with Flax Seed Oil.
I sneak it in the Tomato Sauce (being kiwi kids they love a dash of this on the side of some meals), I mix about half a cup of FlaxSeed Oil in a refillable container of Tomato Sauce...who would know??
I also include it in my homemade mayo (recipe further down) but we don't have as many salads during winter..
Just another little way to PURE ECO your life..

Once per week..I
Or maybe twice a week I serve up a vegetarian meal (or at least meatless)
..while we enjoy meat (and being gluten intolerant my diet is already too restrictive!) I do cook one or two dinners a week that are meat free.
Hubby isn't always that impressed...but he doesn't really have a choice.
Post your favourite VEGE meals here... it will be great to share.
Last night it was Sweetcorn Fritters, Coleslaw & Wedges... all homemade from scratch.
Recipes to follow...including a beaut little vegetable curry which is gorgeous and worthy of the best dinner party also.

Australian Town Bans Bottles....
A small Australian town has become the first in the world to ban bottled water.
Bundanoon, a pretty rural town in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales agreed the move at a public meeting today.
Businesses in the town of 2,500 people will stop selling bottled water and visitors will be discouraged from drinking it. Instead, they will be provided with bottles labelled with the slogan "Bundy on tap" that can be re-filled with tap water.
Retailers in the town — until now best known for hosting an Australian version of the Scottish Highland Games, entitled Brigadoon — say they are behind the move despite facing a substantial loss of income from water sales....

Now if everyone had an Eco Tanka Stainless Steel Drink bottle this would solve this problem and so so much more...

Chemical Free Cleaning with ENJO
Here at Pure Eco... I am seriously excited about cleaning my shower!!
Before you think I've lost it completely, last week I bought a few bits and pieces from the ENJO Range... Chemical Free Cleaning Cloths. I will profile them as I go.
The ENJO Bathroom Glove ($53 NZD) isn't cheap, but it will last 3+ years. I bought it to clean my shower specifically... the person who invented Acrylic Showers obviously didn't need to clean HIS invention..
When I was pregnant I didn't use any chemical cleaners...but now revert every now and then because I have to have a clean shower (it's my sanctuary and I need it clean to relax!) ...Some of those 'natural product claims are dubious'....
OK, here goes.. will report soon.

Lemons for Africa ...
Our Lemon Tree is looking just gorgeous and is dripping with fruit.
We will never get through all this fruit, so we've been picking and bagging the fruit.
We will put at Preschool, where takers can donate a little loose change to the two little children that our lovely Preschool sponsors in Africa & India.
We can't send our fruit there to help out, but in a round about way we are doing just that!

Magics (aka Cape Gooseberries)
MAGICS ...that is what Mr 4 calls his produce from our Cape Gooseberry plant.
When we first planted it, as a cutting from my grandparents plant (the very plants i used to rumbage around when I was small) it struggled away...now it was about to take over valuable vege growing space.
I uprooted it and we have planted it in the orchard so it can spread to it's hearts content.
We have had so much joy from our 'Magic' plant ....Ben eats between 5-20 gooseberries a day in summer.
fingers crossed it survives it's move, chances are it will, if not a trip to the grandparents 'motherstock' may be in order again
Enjoy, and remember you can get inventive with your 5+ a day options...think outside the square.

Dr Rodney Ford..... you saved my life
Media Release
Gluten causes neurological disease....'oh yes it does'
A long list of nerve and brain disorders has been associated with gluten sensitivity. These include: wobbly walking (cerebella ataxia), muscle weakness, slow development, learning problems, attention deficit disorder (ADD), depression, lethargy, migraine and headache. Medical research has shown that these problems can be triggered by gluten and occur in people who do not have coeliac disease.
Dr Ford has published this new concept in the medical journal Medical Hypotheses - “The gluten syndrome: a neurological disease” http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.mehy.2009.03.037
His hypothesis is that gluten causes people a lot of symptoms by its harmful affect on the nervous system.
This means gluten sensitivity can no longer be seen as only a gut problem: a much wider view of gluten reactions is needed. Subsequently, anyone who has chronic unexplained symptoms - especially if associated with fatigue and tiredness - should be tested for gluten sensitivity. If gluten is the putative harmful agent, then there is no requirement to invoke gut damage and nutritional deficiency to explain the myriad of the symptoms experienced by sufferers of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. He calls this “The Gluten Syndrome”.
Dr Ford’s research shows that one in ten people are adversely affected by gluten: that means there are nearly half a million gluten sufferers in New Zealand. He says that the simple reason for the upsurge of people adopting the gluten-free lifestyle is that for the first time in years they feel well again.
You can find out a lot more from his webpage: www.DrRodneyFord.co.nz

Allerzero - How effective!

Dustmites are a major cause of irritation and allergies in families across the world... here in New Zealand we are not excluded!
Finally a natural 'dustmite' treatment that will help to reduce the dustmite population in your bed, carpets, car, toys, pillow.... eeeww they are everywhere.
Friends with bad bad allergies tried it, and said it helped to minimise the symptoms, at least they had some relief from the endlessness of allergies. It does have a strong cinnamon scent, so if you like cinnamon you'll love this.
Pure Eco also used it to freshen up the kids bedrooms ... could also be used as a room freshener too! Also before locking up the holiday home, or while cleaning up a rental home, spray this around for a lovely natural scent.
Checkout The Green Boutique for more ways to spruce up your life in an Pure Eco way.
Allerzero is available nationwide for stockists please see.... here

It's your bathroom cupboard NOT a laboratory rack!!
Here is the start of some thought provoking points (rants) of discussion that Pure Eco has been thinking about...not so quietly..
Firstly, why do you think the trend of late to include chemicals in common cosmetic brands has evolved??
Pure Eco's Opinion...the mighty dollar, price (cheaper), and it suits the supermarket as they have longer shelf life, amongst other things.
Someone seems to have forgotten WHO these products are made for....ahmmmmmmm it's the consumer, not the supermarket.
Watch this space...to be continued...

In the meantime, Lola & Ben have introduced a range of Natural Baby Skincare products....baby products aren't immune to this chemical adulteration...unfortunately, so it's nice to know there are healthy alternatives...

Can soap nuts be the eco friendly laundry answer??
Soap Nuts seem to the 'green thing of 2009/9' while Pure Eco can see the enormous benefit to the environment in using them...we think they would be suitable for sheets and towels where stains weren't an issue.
100% Organic Soap Nut Berry....Non Allergenic & Saves Water, great for dry spells...
Washing machine use: Add 6-8 SoapNuts to the washbag & place inside the washing machine with your clothes.
Warm water helps to remove stains but you would need a 'whitener' to aid dirty kiddy clothes....Pure Eco is fussy like that!
Available from Scamps

We call them Courgettes
....at the start of each summer we enjoy our corgettes (zucchini)...and few weeks later we are starting to look like them!!
...ironically the price also dives the moment we get our first crop...but as we don't have takeaways here (don't get me wrong I'd love to, but with no true gluten free options in our local town it is easier not to go there) one is forced to some quick and easy meals...
Fry in olive oil crushed garlic (to taste) add grated corgettes, and sweet chilli sauce...boil pasta, once cooked, drain and toss through garlic, corgette mix...serve with a squeeze of lemon, black pepper and sea salt....great on it's own or with fish or meat for a bigger meal..
Enjoy.

Christmas Tree...no more!
With all the pros and cons for REAL vs PLASTIC in the christmas tree debate..here is the way I'm recycling mine..

my vegetable seedlings get hell from slugs and snails...and to date I've spent a lot on organic pest control for the garden...I've found an ecologically and economically sound alternative...dried pine needles work wonders as they scratch the precious underbelly of any critter than tries to cross them...and just like magic no more nibbled or disappearing seedlings...

...I actually prematurely removed the tree from inside to it's outside resting place as I have some seedlings in need of protection....hopefully it will last all year...roll on Christmas 2009!

Bring on a Pure Eco 2009
This year I will bring you even more wonderful unique and natural foods, devine cosmetics, lifestyle options, gardening tips, fantastically simple and delicious recipes and more..and I can't wait. ..did I mention competitions..
Pure Eco inspires me to reinvent the 'wheel' and to look at what I do for and with my family in a different light and even to try to improve.
I'll share with you my ups and downs in the vegetable garden and what I have learnt and taught along the way.
With economic doom and gloom predicted across the globe, 2009 is the year to sieze the opporutnity to really improve our lives in a natural sense. The economic benefits will be huge, while improving the lives and future for our children and families
....in a Pure Eco sense a 'recession' may even be a good thing...albeit the tough way to find out.
Best,

Garlic ...anyone??
Here it is.. Pure Eco's first garlic crop...some plump bulbs and some skinny bulbs (maybe not enough water & an impatient gardener)...

But pretty good for our first attempt. I'm saving the good ones for next year...Ben & I have had fun planting and harvesting this year and will enjoy eating...marinades anyone! Once it's all dry, I'll plait it up and hang in the garage.
Next year, I'm on the look out for heirloom Dalmation Garlic growing wild from the Northland coast line...love the history of it all!

Eco Tanka phase 2!
as you know Pure Eco is a fan of the stainless steel drink bottles by
Eco Tanka...our 3 year old son has been using his 350mL Teeny Tanka for ages now...but his 8 month sister was in need of a 'sipper' bottle...so (sshh) don't tell them but Holly now has his 'old' bottle and Ben has graduated to the 500mL Mini Tanka ($19NZD)...awesome!
Now I ask how often can drink bottles be reused and reused and even passed on. Being stainless steel I didn't need to research BPA content as I know it's naturally BPA FREE,and don't have to fuss about how to wash and knew it was safe.
With a 'sipper' attachment, it's all she'll need.
ps. We have bought all our 'eco tanka' family...so are true fans.

Angel Baby Lotion

Lemon Infused Olive Oil
Lemon goes hand in hand with Mediterranean cuisine....Simunovich Olive Estate have combined lemon with their Olive Oil....thinking of Greek Islands, or the Croatian Coastline...
Anything from cheeses, to seafood, to lamb can benefit from a dash of citrus in the mix.
It’s that faint hint of acidity that makes it a great accompaniment to a fresh summer salad or the key ingredient in a delicious marinade.
Here is how I use it....
Raw Beetroot Salad...(don't be put off by the title, it is fantastic...)
3-4 medium Beetroot (peeled, washed and grated finely... in food processor if need be!)
about 2 tablespoons of Simunovich Lemon Infused Olive Oil
2 tablespoons of prepared whole grain mustard (choose the gluten free option if need be)
about 2 tablespoons of finely chopped italian parsley (and some for garnishing)
season with salt to taste...
Mix together, cover and chill....let the flavours mingle for an hour or two.......Fantastic healthy salad...great at BBQ's....
See www.simuolive.co.nz for retailers..and further details...

Home Made Mayonnaise
This is a real treat in our family..and very popular.
I am adverse to buying the common commercial store bought mayonnaises and dressings…mainly because they are soooo easy to make at home, I don’t like the glucose which is often derived from wheat, the preservatives, the MSG, the packaging, the list goes on..
NB: Because this mayonnaise contains raw egg, it would not be suitable for pregnant mums or those with compromised immunity..
In a blender place:
1 egg
½ tsp salt
½ tsp sugar
1tsp Dijon mustard (or whole grain)
2 Tbsp Wine Vinegar (red wine vinegar is also ok for a differing flavour)
About 1 cup of olive oil (or Ricebran, or other vegetable oil)
Blend the first 5 ingredients. Turn blender on and run a thin stream of oil in until the mayonnaise is as thick as you like it..Season further to taste
You can add garlic (blend with the first five ingredients) or herbs or chilli….however you like it…have fun.
Keep in a glass jar in the fridge….It’s delicious as it won’t be a problem to eat it within the recommended 3 weeks.
We luv it with hot wedges, warm roast vegetable salad, potato salad…Christmas presents..

Our garlic crop….a vampire free zone!!
Our pending garlic crop looks like it will be impressive…
....my husband has fears that I’ll be serving up garlic for breakfast, lunch and dinner, just to rid us of the masses.
I bought (my first and last) bag of organic seed garlic back in winter and planted it on the shortest day, along with some elephant garlic bulbs. The five bulbs….turned into 50 odd cloves, and in turn come the longest day we’ll magically harvest 50 odd bulbs…we’ll set aside the best cloves for next years crop and eat the rest, as well as giving it away when we can.
If you are planting garlic, make sure it’s garlic grown within your homeland …you wouldn’t want to plant the imported varieties and potentially proliferate the accompanying diseases and for that matter ...contravene Biosecurity laws.
I was horrified when bags of 10 bulbs of Chinese garlic in the vegetable store were a mere 49cents… after transport costs, retail markups, packaging etc the poor growers would be losing money…that’s NOT how it should be.
Home grown garlic is tasty, healthy, natural, and easy to grow without taking up too much space. Roll on 22 December…or slightly earlier just so we can eat some with our turkey!!
Watch this space for photos...you can probably smell the garlic from there!!

Supa Tanka by Eco Tanka

At 1.2L, these are the biggest of the Eco Tanka range....
My husband works outside, and is a big water drinker...most the time he takes water from home, as the site water supply can be a bit dubious.....
I have always been concerned about the plastic drink bottle that we used to wash and reuse...there wasn't really any alternative, glass just wasn't a safe option...
I've finally found a suitable everyday drink bottle for him (the prices allows him to have two!! on extra hot days)....Supa tankas are extra large drink bottles. They hold a volume of 1.200 litres (four large glasses), are ultra light and durable...
As pictured above, these bottles are available with either a sports cap or a stainless steel loop cap. Either cap can be replaced or changed...no problems
To care for your bottle, wash it regularly in warm soapy water. Dishwashers are not recommended. Do not freeze.
See Eco Tanka for more details and stockists..

Monarch Butterflies Grace our Garden
....One of the best ways of introducing children to nature is to plant a swan plant…..monarch butterflies sense them from 2kms away
…children can literally watch nature evolve before their eyes, from tiny white eggs to beautiful butterflies within days... These beautiful creatures don’t need special attention, except the fast growing caterpillars will quickly eat themselves out of house and home,
so keep an eye on them and be prepared to provide additional food sources for them. More information can be found on
www.monarch.org.nz
a few swan plants in your garden will help to maintain habitats as well as providing a valuable learning experience for all. I must be honest,
I could watch them for hours, especially the emerging butterfly from the chrysalis….nature at it’s best!!
Most plant stores stock swan plants and other butterfly friendly plants.
Thankyou to the Monarch Butterfly Trust for the photos.

Bubbles Bubbles (Bubble Bath) Made 4 Baby

Our house was a ‘bubble bath free zone’ due to the common chemicals responsible for foaming, not to mention the preservatives, perfumes, and colourants that are often added……..UNTIL NOW!!
Rebecca from Made 4 Baby has recently launched her Bubbles Bubbles – Bubble Bath, with the foaming agent naturally derived from plants…...
...my son is no longer deprived of bubble baths and is having a ball at bath time, his sensitive skin is perfectly at ease also….we tried the gently scented Organic Citrus, for ultra sensitive souls there is also Fragrance Free...
Bubbles, Bubbles like all Made 4 Baby products is free of harsh detergents, petrochemicals, artificial fragrances and parabens….and is made in New Zealand.
Made 4 Baby products are available at selected retailers which are listed on www.made4baby.co.nz where products are also available online ….
a perfect Christmas stocking filler @ $17.95NZD…make bath times fun again… Bubbles Bubbles – Bubble Bath can also be used to blow bubbles instead of household detergents that are often used.
Mr 3 has had the longest bath ever, I’ve had to top up the warm water twice now…he loves all the bubbles!!

Win! Win! Win! with Pure Eco

...Check out our first competition..thanks to Holistic Hair...see side panel for details...good luck....drawn 20 December 2008!
Travelling bliss with the Lola & Ben Sleeping Bag
Albeit…a little biased….as the Lola & Ben Sleeping bag is my creation with friend Sigi, I thought it deserved a special mention on Pure Eco....
Recently our family went away for a long weekend and it was the first time our 6 month daughter Holly had been away… taking her Lola & Ben sleeping bag with us made her feel at ease at bedtime outside of her own little cot that she was used to.
At this time of the year….Spring, the Cotton outer together with the 150gm New Zealand Merino inner was perfect. ….if we had been traveling to the tropics, the cotton outer on its own would have been ideal, or similarly if we had been heading to cooler climes the optional 300gm New Zealand Merino inner would have kept her perfectly snug.
The versatility of our sleeping bag, is the world’s only!…...
Being the only sleeping bag Holly will need all year round for up to when she is two, it is cost effective, easy to travel with and perfectly adaptable…what else would you need??
The sleeping bag is available on www.lolaben.co.nz where free worldwide postage applies until further notice!!

Eco Tanka - Teeny Tanka

My 3 year old son has had an Eco Tanka - Teeny Tanka (it’s a 350mL stainless steel drink bottle) for about a year now. All Eco Tanka products are made from 304 food grade stainless steel so it’s naturally BPA free.
Believe me, in the hands of a 3 year old boy….It is virtually indestructible.
Ultra easy to clean, and after cleaning is genuinely clean, unlike plastic which stains, leaches chemicals, and should to be handled correctly etc .
We are doing our bit for our environment, as we refill it every day with fresh water, and we will use it for years to come…actually Stainless steel has a life of 100+ years, and it’s recyclable. Children always need a supply of fresh water..…the Teeny Tanka is perfect for this.
Teeny tankas are designed for kiddies, or for adults who want a bottle which will fit into a small bag or handbag. They hold a volume of 350mls (one large glass) and are ultra light and compact, measuring approximately 125mm from the bottom to the top of the stainless steel area.
Cost effective, healthy, chemical free, environmentally conscious, easy to use and care for…..
The Eco Tanka – Teeny Tanka finally offers a better alternative to children’s plastic drink bottles…just like it used to be…the way it should be!!
Watch out for more Pure Eco reviews of Eco Tanka products, the whole family has them now!!
For stockists, please see Eco Tanka

the way nature intended...baby style
precious newborns aren't able to tell us when the are hot or cold.
providing the perfect environment for your newborn or toddler is vital. We as parents and care givers need to provide the optimum conditions to ensure they are comfortable. The array of synthetic fibers used to produce newborn clothing and accessories in recent years generally don’t breathe.

inspiration
you know when you have one of those moments that inspires you to put your thoughts....and scribbles in your ideas log into action..
mine was while replacing my son's 'mainstream' toothpaste i noticed that the had added Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLS) to the ingredients since i last bought it...
...absolutely horrified that anyone could put this in a product that my son would probably swallow...i had actively avoided this chemical in shampoos etc for our family for years now.
here i will keep you updated of products i find in my crusade to bring ECO MAINSTREAM....there is no need for these added toxins....
...i'll help you find products that are naturally better for your family, and that I would use with my family....

what pure eco doesn't like....
sodium laureth sulfate (SLS)
food manufactured in china (for no other reason than $$)
MSG (mono sodium glutamate and all alternatives....food shouldn't need enhancers to make it taste good!!)
imported fresh fruit and vegetables...who needs snowpeas from Kenya in the middle of winter?
polyester and synthetic baby clothing & accessories...why would you wrap your baby in plastic???
